It is the relational declaration of the Bridegroom concerning those who never entered into true covenantal knowledge of Him. Matthew 7 reveals that the decisive issue on the last day is not religious activity but whether the Bridegroom has ever known the person as His own. The marriage motif makes the warning both clearer and more urgent.

Contexto bíblico: la totalidad de las Escrituras.

Matthew 7 forms the conclusion of the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5–7). After describing the character of Kingdom people, Jesus ends with four sharp contrasts:

The narrow and wide gates (7:13–14)

True and false prophets known by their fruit (7:15–20)

Those who say “Lord, Lord” versus those who do the will of the Father (7:21–23)

The wise and foolish builders (7:24–27)

The most piercing statement comes in verse 23:

“And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’”

This warning stands in continuity with the rest of Scripture’s emphasis on relational knowledge of God (Jeremiah 9:23–24; Hosea 6:6; John 17:3) and with the consistent portrayal of the people of God as betrothed to the Lord (Hosea 2:19–20; 2 Corinthians 11:2; Ephesians 5:25–27; Revelation 19:7–9).

Clarification on Method

In this paper we use the term typology for the biblically authorized pattern in which earlier persons, events, or institutions point forward to Christ and the Church. Typology remains grounded in the historical meaning of the text and is controlled by the way Jesus and the apostles read Scripture (Luke 24:27, 44–47). It is not allegory. The marriage motif is one of the primary ways Scripture itself describes the covenant relationship between Christ and His people; Matthew 7 must be read inside that framework.

Tipología y motivos matrimoniales

The central declaration of Matthew 7:23 is the language of the Bridegroom.

Greek Breakdown of “I Never Knew You”

The Greek text reads: οὐδέποτε ἔγνων ὑμᾶς (oudepote egnōn hymas)

οὐδέποτε (oudepote) = never, at no time

ἔγνων (egnōn) = aorist of γινώσκω (ginōskō) = I knew

ὑμᾶς (hymas) = you (plural)

While γινώσκω can refer to simple intellectual knowledge, in relational and covenantal contexts it regularly carries the sense of personal, intimate, relational knowledge. It is the same verb used for the deep “knowing” of husband and wife and for the mutual knowledge between the Father and the Son (Matthew 11:27; John 10:14–15).

Thus Jesus is not saying, “I never had information about you.” He is saying: “I never knew you relationally — I never acknowledged you as Mine — you never belonged to Me.”

This is the Bridegroom’s final verdict. The people in view claimed His name, preached, cast out demons, and did many mighty works. Yet the decisive issue was not their activity but the absence of covenantal knowledge. They never entered the exclusive relationship that marks the true Bride. The Bridegroom does not recognize them as His own.

The surrounding contrasts reinforce the same point. The narrow gate is the way of exclusive loyalty. False prophets are recognized by the fruit of their lives, not by their claims. The wise builder hears and does the words of Jesus — the posture of a faithful Bride — while the foolish builder hears but does not obey. On the last day the only question that matters is whether the Bridegroom has ever known the person as belonging to Him.

Comprensión ante-nicena

The earliest Christian writers took this warning with great seriousness. They understood that profession of Christ’s name and even miraculous works were not sufficient. What mattered was genuine obedience and belonging to Christ. The warning functioned as a safeguard against presumption and as a call to examine whether one truly belonged to the Lord. They did not soften the relational force of “I never knew you.”

Ya y aún no

Already: The Bridegroom knows His own now. The marriage motif makes this warning both clearer and more searching.

Resumen pastoral

Matthew 7 is the Bridegroom’s loving but uncompromising warning to His Church. Religious activity, correct doctrine, spiritual gifts, and even miracles are not the final evidence of belonging. The only safe ground is to be known by Him — to live in the exclusive, obedient relationship of the true Bride. The same Jesus who will one day say “I never knew you” to some is the Bridegroom who now invites every hearer into genuine knowledge of Himself. The narrow gate is still open. The wise builder still has time to dig deep and build on the rock of hearing and doing His words.

Practical Steps

Examine your confidence: Is it resting on religious activity and correct profession, or on the knowledge that the Bridegroom knows you as His own?

Test the fruit of your life against the obedience Jesus describes in the Sermon on the Mount.

Refuse to treat spiritual gifts or ministry success as proof of belonging.

Pray regularly for a heart that hears and does the words of Jesus, the posture of a faithful Bride.

When you encounter teaching that minimizes the seriousness of this warning, return to the plain words of the Bridegroom.

Pregunta de reflexión

If the Bridegroom were to speak to me today, would He say that He knows me as His own, or is my confidence still resting on things I have done in His name?

Contraargumentos comunes

“This warning is only for false teachers, not ordinary believers.” Response: The text addresses “everyone who hears these words of mine” and includes those who say “Lord, Lord.” The warning is broader than professional false teachers.

“Jesus is speaking only about final justification by works.” Response: The decisive phrase is relational: “I never knew you.” Works are evidence, but the root issue is whether covenantal knowledge ever existed.

“Reading bridal language into ‘I never knew you’ is an over-interpretation.” Response: γινώσκω in relational contexts already carries covenantal weight, and the wider biblical portrayal of God’s people as betrothed supplies the natural framework for hearing the Bridegroom’s verdict.

“This creates unhealthy fear and insecurity in believers.” Response: The warning is meant to destroy false security, not true assurance.
