In reality, it introduces a competing center of loyalty that divides the heart of the Bride. By treating the modern nation-state of Israel and the ethnic Jewish people as possessing an ongoing, central covenantal status alongside or even above the multi-ethnic Church, Christian Zionism reverts to forms of the Old Covenant that the New Testament declares fulfilled and obsolete. The nation of Israel was judged in the first century, and the diaspora that followed was the enduring mark of that judgment. The modern political re-formation of Israel does not reverse that judgment; when Christians elevate it to covenantal or prophetic necessity, it becomes evidence of spiritual bigamy. Moreover, the claim that ethnic or national Israel remains specially favored by God in a way that demands the Church’s allegiance portrays God as partial—loving and favoring one people above others—rather than the just and impartial Father who calls all nations equally through the gospel. In this respect, it shares the same problematic assumption found in deterministic systems that assign eternal destinies apart from genuine human response. The pure Bride is defined by exclusive devotion to one Husband—Jesus Christ. Any theology that elevates a national or ethnic project to the level of necessary Christian allegiance is therefore anathema to the fidelity He requires.

Contexto bíblico: la totalidad de las Escrituras.

The New Testament consistently redefines the people of God around Christ:

The promises to Abraham find their fulfillment in Christ and in those who belong to Him (Galatians 3:16, 29).

There is no longer Jew nor Gentile in the sense of covenantal privilege; all are one in Christ Jesus (Galatians 3:28; Ephesians 2:14–16).

The Church is the Bride betrothed to one Husband (2 Corinthians 11:2), being prepared for presentation in splendor (Ephesians 5:25–27).

The old covenant is declared obsolete (Hebrews 8:13). The earthly temple, sacrifices, and national theocracy pointed forward to Christ and are no longer the center of God’s purpose.

Jesus Himself pronounced judgment on Jerusalem and its temple. He wept over the city and declared that its house would be left desolate (Matthew 23:37–39). He foretold the destruction of the temple in explicit terms (Matthew 24:1–2; Luke 19:41–44; 21:20–24). That judgment fell in AD 70. The city and temple were destroyed, the national sacrificial system ended, and the Jewish people entered a long diaspora that the New Testament already treats as the consequence of rejecting the Messiah. The early Church understood this destruction exactly as Jesus had announced it—as judgment—and the long diaspora that followed was read by the Ante-Nicene writers as the enduring sign of that judgment (Justin Martyr, Dialogue with Trypho 16, 25). Said plainly, no ethnicity is favored in the New Testament but those in Christ.

The apostolic writings never instruct the Church to orient its hope, loyalty, or eschatology around a future reversal of that judgment or the restoration of a national Israel. The focus remains the Bridegroom and the multi-ethnic people He is gathering for Himself from every nation—including Jewish people who turn to Christ.

Tipología y motivos matrimoniales

The marriage motif is exclusive by nature. The Bride has one Husband. Her identity, security, and future are bound solely to Him.

The diaspora is not an accident of history; it is the historical outworking of the judgment Jesus announced. When the national structures that had been the center of the old covenant order were removed, the way was cleared for the Bride to be understood as a people defined solely by union with the Bridegroom, not by land, temple, or ethnic boundary.

Christian Zionism, in its theological form, treats the modern political re-formation of Israel as a prophetic restoration that demands the Church’s allegiance and support as a matter of biblical fidelity. In doing so, it attempts to reverse or relativize the judgment of AD 70 and to place a national project back at the center of God’s purpose. This creates a divided loyalty to His Son. The Bride is told by Zionists that her devotion to Christ is incomplete unless she also binds herself to the fortunes of a modern nation-state. That demand is the essence of spiritual bigamy and is nowhere in the New Testament.

There is a further distortion. To insist that ethnic or national Israel remains specially favored by God in a covenantal sense that the Church must honor is to portray God as partial. It implies that His love and purpose are still weighted toward one people above the rest of humanity. The New Testament reveals the opposite: God is no respecter of persons; the gospel is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek (Romans 1:16; 2:11). The Bridegroom is gathering a Bride from every tribe, language, people, and nation. Any theology that reintroduces a hierarchy of peoples after the cross undermines the justice and universal love of God and, like deterministic systems of election (Calvinism), risks assigning status and destiny apart from the genuine response of faith that the gospel requires of all people.

The prophets used marital language to describe Israel’s unfaithfulness when she turned to other lovers. The same imagery now exposes any system that requires the Church to take a national project as a co-partner in her devotion. The Bridegroom will not share His Bride’s heart with another center of covenantal significance—especially one that stands on the far side of the judgment He Himself pronounced.

Moral Entanglement and the Height of Spiritual Bigamy There is a further and more severe dimension. The modern nation-state established in 1948, like every other nation, has been responsible for acts of violence, displacement, and injustice. When Christians not only defend the theological necessity of that state but also provide religious cover for its actions—minimizing, justifying, or remaining silent about serious moral wrongs committed in its name—they deepen the division of loyalty to Christ.

To bind the Bride’s conscience to a national project while overlooking or excusing the suffering inflicted on others is to place political and ethnic allegiance above the character of the Bridegroom, who calls His people to love their enemies, seek justice, and refuse partiality. Such entanglement is spiritual bigamy at a heightened level: the Bride is asked to remain loyal to her Husband while simultaneously protecting and sacralizing the actions of another power. This is not merely a political misjudgment; it is a theological betrayal that renders the Church’s witness anathema to the exclusive devotion Christ requires.

Comprensión ante-nicena The Ante-Nicene writers lived in the generations after the destruction of the temple in AD 70 and consistently treated that event as decisive judgment of Israel. They did not look for a restored national theocracy as a central focus of Christian hope or loyalty.

Justin Martyr, writing in the mid-second century, is especially clear. In his Dialogue with Trypho, he repeatedly argues that the Church is the true spiritual Israel and that the calamities which fell upon the Jewish people (including the destruction of the temple and the ongoing diaspora) came because they rejected and killed the Messiah. He writes that the Jews “have been delivered into the hands of their enemies” and that the Scriptures are now rightly understood only by those who believe in Christ (Dialogue with Trypho 16, 25, 123, 135). For Justin, the old national order had been judged, and the promises fulfilled in the multi-ethnic people gathered around Jesus.

Irenaeus likewise understands the Church as the continuation of the people of God. In Against Heresies he presents Christ as the fulfillment of the promises made to Abraham and Israel, and he sees the extension of those promises to the Gentiles as the outworking of God’s plan rather than a temporary interruption awaiting a later national restoration (Against Heresies 4.21; 5.32–36). The focus remains the return of Christ and the resurrection, not the political re-gathering of ethnic Israel.

Other early voices move in the same direction. Melito of Sardis, in his Peri Pascha (On Pascha), speaks of Israel’s rejection of the Lord and the consequent judgment. Tertullian and Origen also treat the destruction of Jerusalem as divine judgment for the rejection of Christ and understand the Church as the people who now inherit the spiritual blessings.

The later rise of Christian Zionism—especially in its dispensational forms that treat the modern state of Israel as a prophetic restoration demanding Christian allegiance—represents a significant departure from this early consensus. The Ante-Nicene fathers read the diaspora and the judgment of AD 70 as the historical confirmation that the old national and temple order had been fulfilled and set aside in favor of the Bride gathered from all nations around the Bridegroom.

Ya y aún no

Already: The Bride is united to Christ. The dividing wall has been broken down. The judgment on the old national order has fallen. The nations—including Jewish people—are being gathered into the one people of God by faith in the Messiah. The diaspora stands as a lasting sign that the Old Covenant structures have been fulfilled and set aside in Christ.

Not Yet: The full public manifestation of the Bride’s glory and the final judgment await the return of the Bridegroom. Nothing in that future hope requires the Church to center its present loyalty on a modern nation-state or to treat its political existence as a reversal of the first-century judgment.

Silogismo lógico

Major Premise: The pure Bride’s fidelity consists in exclusive loyalty to Jesus Christ as her one Husband. Any system that places a national, ethnic, or political entity in a position of necessary covenantal allegiance alongside or above Him constitutes spiritual bigamy and is incompatible with the New Covenant. Such a system also distorts the justice and universal love of God by reintroducing partiality among peoples after the cross.

Minor Premise: Christian Zionism treats the modern nation-state of Israel—established long after Jesus pronounced judgment on Jerusalem and the temple, and after the resulting diaspora—as possessing ongoing covenantal or prophetic necessity that demands the Church’s theological loyalty and support as a matter of biblical faithfulness. In doing so, it relativizes the first-century judgment, reintroduces a national center that the New Testament declares fulfilled and obsolete, and implies a continuing divine favoritism toward one people.

Conclusion: Therefore, Christian Zionism introduces a rival center of loyalty, constitutes spiritual bigamy, undermines the impartial love of God for all nations, and is anathema to the exclusive fidelity the Bride owes her Bridegroom.

Resumen pastoral This is not a call to hostility toward Jewish people. The gospel is for the Jew first and also for the Gentile. Believers are commanded to love all people, seek the peace of the places where they live, and reject every form of ethnic hatred. Many Jewish people continue to turn to their Messiah, and they are welcomed as full members of the Bride without distinction.

The issue is theological and covenantal. When Christian teachers bind the conscience of the Bride to the support of a modern national project as a test of biblical fidelity, they move the center away from the Bridegroom. The judgment of AD 70 and the long diaspora that followed already declared that the old national order was no longer the focus of God’s covenant purpose. To treat the modern re-formation of Israel as a prophetic necessity that demands the Church’s allegiance is to resist the implications of that judgment, to introduce a competing husband, and to portray God as partial rather than the just and loving Father who invites all peoples equally. The pure Bride refuses the division.

Pregunta de reflexión

Does my understanding of God’s purposes keep Jesus Christ and His multi-ethnic Bride at the absolute center, or has a national project—formed after the judgment and diaspora Jesus announced—been given a place of necessary loyalty that competes with exclusive devotion to the Bridegroom and implies that God favors one people above the rest?

Contraargumentos comunes

“God’s covenant with Israel is everlasting; therefore modern Israel remains central.” Response: The everlasting promises are fulfilled in Christ, the true Seed of Abraham. The New Testament does not transfer those promises to a modern nation-state as an ongoing parallel track alongside the Church, nor does it treat the first-century judgment as temporary or reversible by political means.

“This position is a form of replacement theology that hates the Jewish people.” Response: Fulfillment is not replacement in a hostile sense. The Church is the continuation of the people of God through faith in the Messiah. The diaspora itself is the historical mark of the judgment that fell on the national order that rejected Him. Rejection of Christian Zionism is a rejection of a theological system, not of a people.

“Romans 11 teaches that God still has a future plan for national Israel.” Response: Romans 11 speaks of a partial hardening and a future turning of many Jewish people to Christ. It does not establish a restored national theocracy, reverse the judgment of AD 70, or make the modern state an object of necessary Christian loyalty.

“The return of the Jewish people to the land is a clear fulfillment of prophecy.” Response: The New Testament does not instruct the Church to read modern political events as the reversal of the judgment Jesus pronounced or as a new center of covenantal allegiance. The diaspora remains the larger biblical and historical reality; the modern state does not undo it.

“Supporting Israel is simply standing with God’s people against their enemies.” Response: The people of God are now defined by union with Christ. Political judgments about any nation must be made by ordinary wisdom and justice, not by elevating that nation to a covenantal status that demands the Bride’s theological allegiance. To claim special divine favor for one nation after the cross also implies a partiality in God that contradicts His revealed love for all peoples and the equal call of the gospel to every nation.

Notas a pie de página

¹ Galatians 3:16, 28–29; Ephesians 2:14–16; 5:25–27; 2 Corinthians 11:2; Hebrews 8:13; Matthew 23:37–24:2; Luke 19:41–44; 21:20–24; Romans 1:16; 2:11. ² Justin Martyr, Dialogue with Trypho 16, 25, 123, 135 (the Church as true Israel; calamities and diaspora as judgment for rejecting the Messiah); Irenaeus, Against Heresies 4.21; 5.32–36; Melito of Sardis, Peri Pascha; the broader Ante-Nicene consensus that the judgment of AD 70 and the subsequent diaspora confirmed the transition from the national covenant order to the multi-ethnic Bride. ³ The marriage motif as the test of exclusive loyalty: any system that requires the Bride to share her covenantal devotion with a national project—especially one that stands after the judgment and diaspora announced by the Bridegroom—fails the test of fidelity and distorts the impartial love of God for all nations.

Thesis Christian Zionism claims to be a faithful expression of the biblical worldview.
