This tension is not a puzzle to be solved by collapsing one side or the other. It is the condition in which the Bride now lives. She is already betrothed to the Bridegroom; she is not yet at the marriage supper of the Lamb. Over-realized views treat the Kingdom as already complete in the Church, the nation, or a political project. Under-realized views treat it as only future and leave the Bride without present loyalty and obedience. The apostolic pattern holds both together. The pure Bride lives under the present reign of her Husband while she waits for His appearing, refusing every attempt to force the “not yet” into the present by the methods of this age.

Contexto bíblico: la totalidad de las Escrituras.

Jesus announced that the Kingdom had drawn near (Mark 1:15). He said the Kingdom was in the midst of His hearers (Luke 17:20–21). He taught His disciples to pray, “Your kingdom come” (Matthew 6:10), which assumes both a present claim and a future fulfillment. Believers have already been transferred into the Kingdom of the beloved Son (Colossians 1:13). They have already tasted the powers of the age to come (Hebrews 6:5). At the same time they wait for the appearing of the Kingdom in power (2 Timothy 4:1), the resurrection, and the day when the kingdoms of this world become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ (Revelation 11:15).

The same tension governs the Church’s identity. The Bride is already washed, betrothed, and being sanctified (Ephesians 5:25–27; 2 Corinthians 11:2). She is not yet presented in final splendor at the marriage supper (Revelation 19:7–9). She already belongs to the Bridegroom; she does not yet see Him face to face (1 John 3:2).

Tipología y motivos matrimoniales

In these papers we use the term typology for the biblically authorized pattern in which earlier persons, events, or institutions point forward to Christ and the Church. The marriage motif is the governing typology for the Church’s relationship to Christ.

Earthly betrothal is the clearest picture of the already and the not yet. A bride is already bound to her husband by covenant. She is not yet living in the fullness of the marriage. She prepares herself. She remains exclusive. She does not act as if the wedding has already occurred, nor does she live as if no covenant yet exists.

When the Church collapses the “already,” she lives as if she is not yet the Bride and treats the Kingdom as only a future hope with little present claim. When she collapses the “not yet,” she acts as if the wedding has already come and tries to make the Kingdom visible by institutional power, national success, or political control. Both errors are forms of spiritual bigamy. One neglects the Husband who already claims her. The other tries to consummate the marriage by another means than His return.

Clarifying the Distinction

Faithful Tension

The Kingdom is already present in Christ’s reign and in the people who belong to Him.

The Kingdom is not yet complete in public power, judgment, and new creation.

The Bride already belongs to the Bridegroom and already lives under His word.

The Bride still waits, suffers, and refuses to force the final day by worldly means.

Over-Realized Distortion

Treating the institutional church, a Christian culture, or a nation as the Kingdom already come.

Using the sword, the ballot, or cultural dominance to “establish” what only the returning King can complete.

Acting as if present success is the measure of the Kingdom.

Under-Realized Distortion

Treating the Kingdom as only future and therefore optional for present obedience.

Delaying holiness, loyalty, and exclusive devotion until “someday.”

Living as if the Bridegroom has not already claimed His people.

The Simple Test

Ask: “Do I live as a betrothed Bride—already belonging to Christ and already under His reign—while still waiting for His appearing? Or have I either postponed His claim until the future, or tried to finish His Kingdom now by the methods of this age?”

Comprensión ante-nicena

The early Church held this tension with remarkable consistency. They proclaimed Christ as the risen Lord who already reigns. They also expected His visible return and a future earthly consummation (Chiliasm / Historic Premillennialism). They did not identify the Kingdom with Rome, nor did they wait in passivity. They lived as a distinct people under present loyalty to Christ while refusing to seize imperial power as the way the Kingdom would come. Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, Tertullian, and Hippolytus all combine present reign with future hope. The later fusion of Church and empire after Constantine was, in part, a collapse of the “not yet”—an attempt to make the Kingdom visible by political means. The pure Bride recovers the earlier pattern.

Ya y aún no

This entire paper is the exposition of that tension. In summary:

Already: Christ reigns. The Bride is betrothed. The way of the Kingdom is already binding.

Not Yet: The marriage supper, the public judgment of the nations, and the new creation still lie ahead. Until then, every earthly culture, government, and church form remains provisional.

Silogismo lógico

Major Premise: Scripture teaches that the Kingdom is already present in Christ and not yet consummated in its fullness, and that the Church is already the betrothed Bride waiting for the wedding.

Minor Premise: Collapsing either side of this tension produces either passivity or an attempt to finish the Kingdom by worldly power.

Conclusion: The Bride must live in the tension—exclusive present loyalty to the Bridegroom-King, without forcing the future by the sword, the nation, or the institution.

Resumen pastoral

The already and the not yet is not an academic slogan. It is the shape of the Bride’s life. She already belongs to Jesus. She already lives under His reign. She is not yet home. That is why she can seek the welfare of the city without marrying it. That is why she can gather, obey, and suffer without treating any present form as the finished Kingdom. The civic and cultural errors we have already named—patriotism as identity, the sword as method, American cultural Christianity as the faith itself—are all failures to hold this tension. The remedy is not a new system. It is to live as a betrothed woman who loves her Husband now and waits for Him still.

Practical Steps for the Bride

When you pray “Your kingdom come,” mean both present obedience and future hope.

Refuse any teaching that says the Kingdom is only future and therefore holiness can wait.

Refuse any project that claims to finish the Kingdom now by political, military, or institutional power.

Measure success by faithfulness to the Bridegroom, not by cultural or political outcomes.

Hold every church form, culture, and nation with an open hand.

Let earthly marriage, if you have it, train you in the same tension: already one, not yet the marriage supper.

Regularly confess both truths: “He already reigns. Or have I collapsed the tension into either delay or an attempt to finish the Kingdom by the methods of this age?

Contraargumentos comunes

“If the Kingdom is already here, we should take power and make society Christian.” Response: The “already” is the reign of the Bridegroom among His people, not the sacralizing of a nation or institution. Using power to force the “not yet” is the error of over-realized eschatology.

“If the Kingdom is not yet, present politics and culture do not matter.” Response: The Bride still lives in the world, seeks its welfare, and obeys her Husband now. The “not yet” forbids marriage to earthly power; it does not forbid love of neighbor.

“This tension is too complicated for ordinary believers.” Response: It is as simple as betrothal. You already belong to Him. You are not yet at the wedding. Live faithfully in between.

“The early Church expected everything immediately, so they were wrong about the delay.” Response: They held present reign and future return together. The delay is the patience of the Lord (2 Peter 3:9), not a reason to collapse either side.

“This is just an excuse for political withdrawal.” Response: Seeking the city’s welfare is commanded.
