Membership in that Bride is by union with Christ, not by earthly marriage certificate; yet earthly marriage was given as the living picture of the purpose. God created all things good; the first “not good” was that the man was alone, and God answered it with the one-flesh union that would become the typology of Christ and the Church. Good and evil are not rival substances God manufactured. Evil is not a stuff He baked into the world; it is what creatures do when they turn from Him. Good is known in free-will action aligned with His will. That is why the Father’s plan to bring a pure Bride to the Marriage Supper of the Lamb is an act of justice as well as love. Love itself is defined by covenant vows, not by feeling alone. To live in obedient fidelity to the Husband is the action that pleases and glorifies the Father. The Old Covenant was necessary to teach betrothal so that this reality would be intelligible. The recurring error—shared by Israel and by much of the church—is to prefer a political King on our terms over a Husband who demands exclusive loyalty. Seeking a king is not wrong because Christ is not King; it is wrong when kingship is wanted without bridal loyalty. That error is spiritual bigamy, and it invites judgment.

Contexto bíblico: la totalidad de las Escrituras.

1. Creation, goodness, and the first “not good”

God created and repeatedly declared His work good, and finally very good (Genesis 1:31). Evil is not a thing He planted in the soil of creation. The first explicit “not good” in Scripture is relational and purposeful:

“Then the Lord God said, ‘It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.’” (Genesis 2:18)

Everything material God had made was good. What was not yet complete was the image-bearing union of man and woman. God formed the woman, brought her to the man, and established the one-flesh covenant (Genesis 2:23–24). Marriage was not an afterthought. It was the capstone of a good creation and the typology by which humanity would later understand God’s own intent to have a people exclusively His.

2. Good and evil as free-will action, not substance

Scripture does not treat evil as a created element alongside light and land. God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all (1 John 1:5). He is not tempted by evil and tempts no one (James 1:13). Evil enters as act: the serpent’s deception, the human choice to distrust and disobey (Genesis 3). Good, likewise, is not a floating substance. It is known in action aligned with God’s will—trust, obedience, covenant faithfulness.

If evil were a substance God made, He would be its author. If good were automatic and coerced, loyalty would not be loyalty. Free agency is what makes praise and blame just. The same framework makes the Marriage Supper just: the Bride is not dragged into the wedding by force; she is prepared through a history of real calls, real vows, real fidelity and real refusal. The Father’s plan honors the nature He gave image-bearers.

3. Israel as the first public betrothal

The prophets describe Yahweh and Israel in marital terms: the devotion of youth, love as a bride, covenant at Sinai, and idolatry as adultery (Jeremiah 2:2; Hosea 1–3; Ezekiel 16). This was real covenant history and necessary typology. God was training a people—and, through Scripture, the later Bride—to understand exclusive loyalty, betrayal, jealousy, judgment, and promised restoration.

4. Why the Old Covenant was necessary

Without the Old Covenant, the Church would lack the grammar of betrothal:

Covenant oath and blood

Exclusive loyalty (“no other gods”)

Adultery as the name for idolatry

Judgment and “divorce” language for covenant breach

Promise of a new covenant written on the heart (Jeremiah 31:31–34; Hosea 2:14–20)

The Law and the prophets did not create the marital purpose; they disclosed it in history so that when Christ the Bridegroom came, the call to exclusive devotion would be clear.

5. Fulfillment in Christ and the Church

Jesus is the Bridegroom (Matthew 9:15; John 3:29). The Church is betrothed to one husband (2 Corinthians 11:2). The one-flesh union “refers to Christ and the church” (Ephesians 5:31–32). The story ends with the marriage supper of the Lamb and the Bride made ready (Revelation 19:7–9; 21:2, 9). One new people in Christ—Jew and Gentile—not two parallel wives (Ephesians 2:14–16; Galatians 3:26–29). Judgment on the unfaithful old order was real; the marital purpose continued through the remnant and is fulfilled in the Church.

6. Love defined by vows; obedience as the action that glorifies the Father

Biblical love is not mere emotion. It is covenant commitment expressed in action. “If you love me, you will keep my commandments” (John 14:15). Husbands love as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her; the church submits as to the Lord (Ephesians 5:22–25). The Marriage Supper celebrates not a feeling that drifted heavenward, but a Bride who has been washed, betrothed, and found in faithful belonging to her Husband. That obedient fidelity is free-will action. It pleases the Father because it matches His design from the garden: image-bearers freely aligned with His Son, not robots and not rebels.

Already / Not Yet

Already: Creation’s typology is in place; the Old Covenant has taught betrothal; the Bridegroom has come; the Church is betrothed and being sanctified by the Word; earthly marriages may display the pattern.

Not Yet: The public Marriage Supper, the final removal of evil’s actions from the world, and the visible presentation of the Bride still await His appearing.

Tipología y motivos matrimoniales

In these papers we use the term typology for the biblically authorized pattern in which earlier persons, events, or institutions point forward to Christ and the Church. The marriage motif is the governing typology for the Church’s relationship to Christ.

The one-flesh union, Sinai’s covenant, the prophets’ charges of adultery, and the New Testament’s Bride language are not decorative. They are the way God taught us to read His purpose. Evil, as rebellious action, is the anti-type of bridal fidelity. Good, as obedient action, is the substance of a Bride who loves her Husband in deed. The Marriage Supper is therefore just: it consummates a covenant history in which free creatures have been genuinely called to loyalty, not programmed into it.

Earthly Marriage as Living Typology

God did not leave the typology only on the page. He placed it in the household.

Paul’s argument in Ephesians 5 does not begin with marriage and later invent a spiritual comparison. He begins with Christ and the Church, then calls husbands and wives to live the pattern:

The husband loves, gives himself, nourishes, and cherishes—as Christ does the Church.

The wife respects and submits—as the Church does to Christ.

The one-flesh union is already a mystery that “refers to Christ and the church” (Ephesians 5:32).

Earthly marriage is therefore not a private lifestyle option with optional religious flavor. It is a living sermon. When a husband keeps covenant in costly action, he makes the Bridegroom’s love visible. When a wife keeps covenant in loyal action, she makes the Bride’s devotion visible. When either breaks covenant, the picture is distorted—and the watching world (and the next generation) learns a false gospel about Christ and the Church.

This does not mean single believers are second-class. Membership in the Bride is by union with Christ, not by earthly certificate. It does mean that where God grants marriage, He grants a daily arena for free-will good: vow-keeping, forgiveness, exclusive loyalty, and the refusal of spiritual and literal adultery. The same definition of love applies at both levels—covenant action, not mere feeling. The same definition of evil applies—betrayal as act, not as a substance that “happened to” the home.

In the already / not yet, earthly marriages remain imperfect signs. They point beyond themselves to the wedding that will not fail. They also train the church to recognize spiritual bigamy: a heart that wants the benefits of belonging without the vows of obedience will eventually want a political king without a holy Husband.

The Recapitulated Error: King Instead of Husband

Israel wanted a king like the nations (1 Samuel 8). Many rejected the true King when He came as Bridegroom and Lamb. The church often repeats the pattern: seeking political power, national status, or a conquering program while resisting exclusive devotion to Christ. Christ is King; the error is wanting kingship without bridal loyalty—the benefits of a ruler without the vows of a wife. That is spiritual bigamy. Judgment fell on that error in Israel; the church is warned not to presume (Romans 11:20–22).

Comprensión ante-nicena

Early Christian writers read the Old Testament as pointing to Christ and the Church, held creation’s goodness together with real human responsibility, and expected the consummation of Christ’s purpose at His return. They treated marriage as honorable and ordered under Christ, not as a sacrament that replaced faith, and not as a private contract detached from the gospel. They did not treat evil as a substance God made, nor the Church as a political Israel-substitute seized by the sword.

Silogismo lógico

Major Premise: God created all things good, instituted marriage as typology of His purpose, and defines good and evil in the realm of free-will action so that justice and love are real.

Minor Premise: He disclosed betrothal through Israel, fulfills it in the Church as the Bride of Christ, displays it in earthly marriage, and will consummate it at the Marriage Supper, while judging the error of preferring a political king without bridal loyalty.

Conclusion: The Father’s plan for the Marriage Supper is just; love is covenantal and active; obedience to the Husband glorifies the Father; earthly marriage must preach that pattern; and the Bride must refuse spiritual bigamy.

Resumen pastoral

God did not create evil. He created a good world and a good marriage, then called free image-bearers into a loyalty that mirrors His own intent to have a Bride. The Old Covenant taught the vows. Christ the Bridegroom kept them to the end and now prepares the Church. Earthly husbands and wives are invited to enact the same story in ordinary fidelity. The Marriage Supper will be the public proof that love, justice, and free obedience belong together. Live as betrothed: not as those hunting for a king after the world’s image, but as those whose actions say “I am His” until He comes.

Practical Steps for the Bride

Confess creation’s goodness and refuse every system that makes God the author of evil.

Define love as covenant vow and obedience, not as feeling alone.

Read the Old Covenant as necessary betrothal training for the Church.

If married, treat your vows as a living typology of Christ and the Church—repent where the picture has been distorted.

If unmarried, hold your primary identity as a member of the Bride; do not despise the typology marriage displays.

Examine political and national passions for spiritual bigamy—kingship without bridal loyalty.

Practice daily obedience to Christ as the action that pleases the Father.

Wait for the Marriage Supper as justice and joy, not as escape from responsibility.

Pregunta de reflexión

Do I treat the Marriage Supper as the just consummation of a free, covenantal story—and my obedience (in the church and, if married, in the home) as the love that glorifies the Father—or do I want a King without vows and a salvation without bridal fidelity?

Contraargumentos comunes

“If God created everything, He created evil.” Response: He created free creatures and a good world. The Bridegroom who gave Himself also says, “If you love me, keep my commandments.”

“National Israel remains the primary bride; the Church is a parenthesis.” Response: The typology moved from Israel under the Old Covenant to the multi-ethnic Church in Christ. The New Testament presents one new man, one people of faith, one Bride—not two parallel wives.

“This is supersessionism and erases Israel.” Response: Fulfillment is not erasure of promise; it is promise reaching its goal in the Messiah and the people joined to Him. The dividing wall is broken down in Christ, not rebuilt as two brides.

“Kingship language should dominate over marriage language.” Response: Christ is both King and Bridegroom. Detached from betrothal, kingship becomes the error of 1 Samuel 8 and of every church that seeks power without purity.

“Israel’s hope for a political Messiah was legitimate; the church is wrong to spiritualize it.” Response: The prophets joined kingdom hope to covenant fidelity. Jesus is the true King, but He refused the sword as the means of His present reign (John 18:36). Wanting liberation without loyalty to the Husband is the same distortion that marked much of Israel’s history.

“This puts too much theological weight on earthly marriage.” Response: Scripture puts that weight there (Ephesians 5:32). The weight is typology, not salvation by marriage. Singleness does not exclude anyone from the Bride; unfaithful marriage distorts the picture the Bridegroom gave the world.

“My marriage is too damaged to preach Christ and the Church.” Response: Then the call is repentance, repair where possible, and honesty—not denial of the typology. Broken signs still need the true Bridegroom; they do not erase His design.

“God is called Father far more than Husband; you overstate the marriage motif.” Response: Fatherhood and marriage are not rivals. The same God who adopts us as children also betroths a people to His Son. Multiple titles enrich the truth; none cancel the bridal purpose running from Genesis to Revelation.

“You are allegorizing the Old Testament.” Response: Typology is not free allegory. It follows the way Jesus and the apostles read Scripture (Luke 24:27, 44–47; Ephesians 5:31–32). The prophets themselves used marital language for the covenant; the New Testament does not invent that pattern.

“The Old Covenant was legal and national, not marital.” Response: The Law is covenantal, and the prophets repeatedly name that covenant in bridal terms—love as a bride, adultery, divorce, restoration. Legal and marital are not opposites in Scripture; covenant is both binding and personal.

“If God ‘divorced’ Israel, the husband image collapses.” Response: The prophets use divorce language to show the severity of breach, not to teach that God is an unfaithful husband. He remains true; judgment falls on the unfaithful partner; the purpose continues through remnant and New Covenant fulfillment in Christ.

“Defining good and evil as actions ignores the devil and deep bondage.” Response: Scripture affirms real demonic evil and real human enslavement to sin. That still does not make evil a created substance God authored. Rebellion remains willful act in creatures—angelic or human—against the good Creator.

“Free-will emphasis is just Arminianism or soft Pelagianism.” Response: The issue is whether love and judgment are real. Coerced loyalty is not loyalty; puppet salvation is not justice. Scripture holds divine initiative and genuine human response together. The Marriage Supper is just because the call to the Bride was real.

“Vows and obedience make the gospel transactional.” Response: Covenant is not a business deal. The Bridegroom gives Himself first. Vows are the form of exclusive love, not a price paid to buy grace. A marriage without vows is not more gracious; it is less real.

“Focusing on betrothal excludes the divorced, the widowed, and the wounded.” Response: The primary identity of every believer is membership in the Bride of Christ. Earthly marriage is the living illustration, not the entrance requirement. The wounded are not shut out of the Bridegroom’s care; they are invited to heal under His fidelity.

“Already / not yet is modern academic language, not biblical.” Response: The phrase is recent; the tension is apostolic. The kingdom is present and still coming; the Bride is betrothed and not yet at the supper; we have the Spirit and still wait for the day of redemption. The words serve the reality Scripture already teaches.

“This diminishes the Great Commission and mission to the nations.” Response: The opposite is true. The nations are called into the Bride, not into a national project or a power bloc. Mission is betrothal witness: calling all flesh to the name of the Lord Jesus.

“If the church commits the same error as Israel, then there is no assurance.” Response: Warning is not the cancellation of promise. Israel’s story teaches that privilege without fidelity is not safety (Romans 11:20–22).
